301 redirect 404 to homepage good for SEO?

I run a small web and I use aged domain (jempolkaki.com) firstly i didn’t know that was aged so it’s started getting a huge amount of 404 in my webmaster tools account. What I did is to redirect all invalid (404) posts and pages to homepage and a few more deleted pages!
1. Is this something that negatively impacts SEO?
2. If I let the URLs to return 404 what should I do just ignore the warning from Google.
3. Too many 404 bad for SEO.Please help me to make this right?
