Activity Stream Notifications

I’m building a “private” BP site using the “Private Community for BP” plugin. This site won’t be heavily used (or at least I don’t envision heavy use at this point).
That said, what I would like to have is a way to have BP generate an email notification when a new item is posted to the activity stream. This is highly useful in my situation since updates will be relatively rare and I don’t want to force my members to “ping” the website constantly to check for activity.
The only solution that I have found is to use the RSS feed and MailChimp. Obviously, this isn’t an option with the “Private Community for BP” plugin as the RSS feed is blocked.
Any ideas?
