Activity Stream problem? (BP 2 Beta 1, WP 3.9 Beta 2)

    Hi,

    First, thank you to all the brilliant developers. BuddyPress is the biggest release since you got rid of theme dependencies.

    I have been running BP 2.0 bleeding edge on a test site and just updated to 2.0 Beta 1 and nothing new is appearing on the activity stream when I publish a blog post or comment on the forums etc.

    The site I am running it on has a custom theme and lots of plugins/custom code so it could be a conflict rather than a bug.

    Usually I would test this thoroughly but other people are also working on my development site and I don’t want to mess them up be changing themes and disabling plugins.

    I saw someone commented on this thread and although I had difficulty understanding what they were saying they do say “activity moudle broke” which could mean someone else is having the same problem.

    I hope this is helpful.

    @joesell89 Thanks for the report.

    > nothing new is appearing on the activity stream when I publish a blog post or comment on the forums etc.

    Does this mean that *nothing* is being tracked in the activity stream? Or is it just forum + blog posts that aren’t being tracked? How about new friendships, new memberships, new groups, etc?

    > The site I am running it on has a custom theme and lots of plugins/custom code so it could be a conflict rather than a bug.

    Unfortunately, it could be both – a bug that only arises in the context of other customizations.

    If you can’t toggle things on and off to test, and if you don’t have a sandbox environment – maybe you could check out your error logs to see if anything relevant is being logged there?

    Hi @boonebgorges,

    Thanks for taking an interest. I went ahead and disabled all plugins and enabled Twenty Fourteen to test this out. My sites are hosted by WP Engine and they force some custom code via MU plugins (so, I couldn’t disable that). I also have some redirects set up to force registration on a custom form (via Gravity Forms). I would rather not change this in case I forget how it was set up.

    So, I wasn’t able to work out if new registrations were appearing. However I did test all of these:

      New Friendships (although an email was sent to the user whose friendship was requested)

      Blog Posts

      Blog Comments

      Replies to bbpress topics

      New bbpress topics

      New groups

    None of them showed up in the activity except the new group (which did). Which is weird.

    Hi,

    re

    nothing new is appearing on the activity stream when I publish a blog post or comment on the forums etc.

    My experience so far.
    Setup local install: multisite. WP 3.9 nightly ; BP trunk 8204 minus tests folder; Theme p2 v. 1.5.3 plugins – a lot.

    New Blog Post, New bbpress topics, Replies to bbpress topics and New groups ARE all turning up in Activity.

    but

    *** New Blog comment does NOT turn up in Activity.

    haven’t properly tested Friendship but can report that so far when a request is sent it turns up properly in “Pending Requests” BUT in the Profile is duplicated sometimes over 100 times!

    SEE https://i.imgur.com/lICG7YL.jpg (- some css still to do-)

    Now admittedly this could very well be due to one of the plugins but with the same plugins in 3.8 / 1.9.2 set-up this does not happen.

    Just a grateful user – no great knowledge. Away till Wed.

    before heading away just a small update

    update

    the above behaviour appears (at least on my local installation) to be across themes
    but once one friendship request is accepted all requests (from that member) dissapear

    Another glitch (now at trunk 8207)

    Activity

    Activity appears to be updated on the Main Sitewide Activity Stream — all ok

    but
    the link in members (View) to http://onenetwork.dev/activity/p/331/ resolves to http://my-network.dev/members

    the link in a profile say of Ben4 http://onenetwork.dev/members/ben4/activity does not open instead it resolves to http://my-network.dev/members/ben4/

    and the item-meta in activity “active 3 months ago” is not being updated (see https://i.imgur.com/lICG7YL.jpg )

    @valuser

    Another glitch is NOT a glitch – please disregard -apologies.

    Initial observation re post comment and re frienship requests still stand

    @valuser

    Another glitch is NOT as described – please disregard -apologies.

    it appears to be confined to the update of the item-meta in activity “active 3 months ago” not being updated

    plus

    Initial observation re post comment and re friendship requests still stand

    Hi all – Many thanks for the feedback. I’m a bit at a loss, though, as to what’s happening. I guess my best advice, given that you’re running production sites, is to enable some sort of error logging. Then, look through those error logs around the time you expect to see activity posts but do not. It’s possible that there’ll be clues in the error logs to what’s happening.

    Aside from this, it’s unfortunately the sort of thing that can only be fixed if it can be reproduced. So any additional testing you can do to narrow down the conditions under which it happens will be helpful.

    Hi @boonebgorges,

    Thanks for the reply. I went ahead and set up a clean install of WordPress with BuddyPress and bbPress and all is working as it should. So, this means that it isn’t anything actually wrong with BuddyPress but a conflict somewhere with something I have customised along the way.

    When I work out what it is I will post back here.

    In the meantime, thank you for your hard work and good luck with the release!

    Best,

    Joseph

    Yes – i can reproduce this though fully accept that blame probably lies with my customisations either with plugins or functions though these live happily with bp 1.9.2

    So i have put this up on an online test site – (slow)
    at test site http://ballynagran.isourplace.ie/ – (slow) wp 3.8 bp trunk 8227
    login username ben4 password ben4
    And i believe i’ve reproduced the errors reported.

    Very much appreciate any feedback when time permits.

    1) see http://ballynagran.isourplace.ie/members/ben4/friends/requests/ where a friendship request from ben8 has been repeated over 50 times

    2) the item-meta in activity “active 3 months ago” is not being updated – login as anne anne or nils nils to reproduce

    3) a very recent comment in the blog http://bep.ballyngran.isourplace.ie (at http://bep.ballynagran.isourplace.ie/2013/08/29/solid-fuel-heating-resources/) is not replicated in activity of http://ballyngran.isourplace.ie/activity

    If bp 2 beta is replaced by 1.9.2 normal service is returned.

    bp 1.9.2 can also be seen on a dot com version of this test site on a different server

    Have installed a debug plugin – results can be seen on http://isourplace.ie/wp-content/debug.log

    On a local install tried deactivating cat / tag plugin — no change.

    @boonebgorges I am not sure if I have the same problem as @valuser but I have managed to get a look at the error log for my site and this is the entry that coincides with publishing a post.

    LONG QUERY: SELECT COUNT(NULLIF(meta_valueLIKE '%"administrator"%', false)), COUNT(NULLIF(meta_valueLIKE '%"editor"%', false)), COUNT(NULLIF(meta_valueLIKE '%"author"%', false)), COUNT(NULLIF(meta_valueLIKE '%"contributor"%', false)), COUNT(NULLIF(meta_valueLIKE '%"subscriber"%', false)), COUNT(NULLIF(meta_valueLIKE '%"bbp\\_keymaster"%', false)), COUNT(NULLIF(meta_valueLIKE '%"bbp\\_spectator"%', false)), COUNT(NULLIF(meta_valueLIKE '%"bbp\\_visitor"%', false)), COUNT(NULLIF(meta_valueLIKE '%"bbp\\_blocked"%', false)), COUNT(NULLIF(meta_valueLIKE '%"bbp\\_moderator"%', false)), COUNT(NULLIF(meta_valueLIKE '%"bbp\\_participant"%', false)), COUNT(NULLIF(meta_valueLIKE '%"free\\_paying\\_member"%', false)), COUNT(NULLIF(meta_valueLIKE '%"s2member\\_level1"%', false)), COUNT(NULLIF(meta_valueLIKE '%"s2member\\_level2"%', false)), COUNT(NULLIF(meta_valueLIKE '%"s2member\\_level3"%', false)), COUNT(NULLIF(meta_valueLIKE '%"s2member\\_level4"%', false)), COUNT(*) FROM wp_usermeta WHERE meta_key = 'wp_capabilities'

    I am really not sure how it has anything to do with the problem of not publishing properly but it is the only error in the log on the test site I set up.

    @boonebgorges I am not sure if I am having the same problem as @valuser but I did manage to get hold of the error log on my test site and there is only one error. This one:

    [Tue Apr 01 15:20:22 2014] [error] [client 89.168.15.67] LONG QUERY: SELECT COUNT(NULLIF(meta_valueLIKE '%"administrator"%', false)), COUNT(NULLIF(meta_valueLIKE '%"editor"%', false)), COUNT(NULLIF(meta_valueLIKE '%"author"%', false)), COUNT(NULLIF(meta_valueLIKE '%"contributor"%', false)), COUNT(NULLIF(meta_valueLIKE '%"subscriber"%', false)), COUNT(NULLIF(meta_valueLIKE '%"bbp\\_keymaster"%', false)), COUNT(NULLIF(meta_valueLIKE '%"bbp\\_spectator"%', false)), COUNT(NULLIF(meta_valueLIKE '%"bbp\\_visitor"%', false)), COUNT(NULLIF(meta_valueLIKE '%"bbp\\_blocked"%', false)), COUNT(NULLIF(meta_valueLIKE '%"bbp\\_moderator"%', false)), COUNT(NULLIF(meta_valueLIKE '%"bbp\\_participant"%', false)), COUNT(NULLIF(meta_valueLIKE '%"free\\_paying\\_member"%', false)), COUNT(NULLIF(meta_valueLIKE '%"s2member\\_level1"%', false)), COUNT(NULLIF(meta_valueLIKE '%"s2member\\_level2"%', false)), COUNT(NULLIF(meta_valueLIKE '%"s2member\\_level3"%', false)), COUNT(NULLIF(meta_valueLIKE '%"s2member\\_level4"%', false)), COUNT(*) FROM wp_usermeta WHERE meta_key = 'wp_capabilities'

    I cannot see how it relates to the problem but the timing does coincide with posting a new blog post which did not appear in the activity stream.

    @valuser

    As indicated the problem (on my installation) WAS a plugin.

    items 1 and 2 of my observations above have been eliminated by deactivating this plugin

    Buddypress Friends On-line

    Item 3 still persists (at least on my installation) even with trunk 8229

    @valuser

    Participant

    Correction:

    Item 3 does NOT persist.

    comments from op or anyone else on a blog now come through to activity.

    So all issues that I raised have been resolved.
