Adding 1 left 1 right column layout to BP Default Theme

I want to have a 1 left and 1 right column layout for my activity page. I am using WP 3.6.1 and BP 1.8.1 with the default theme. I have created a child theme folder.
Can I drop a 1 left 1 rt column layout into my Activity folder in my child theme? If so how do I assign widgets to the new sidebar?
Any simple solution or plugins for this?
