Adding extra “instance” of members and groups in single BP installation?

I’ve created a community which contains two separate types of members and groups. Right now, I’ve got them separated into two separate BuddyPress installations. One is the main group, which contains the “civilians” who are just folks who join the community, and the second site is a group of business people organized into a directory (like a phone book). The two sites have an identical theme.

    http://business.mountainprideconnections.com

I’d rather have everyone on the same site, so that we don’t have to maintain two separate web sites (with the complications of linking them in a way that looks as if they are all on one site) yet I want to keep the two types of groups completely separate.

Is there a way to do this? I see that BuddyPress shows more links (buttons) at the top of the pages than the standard installation, and I wonder if it would be possible to have our top buttons area expanded to show something like this:

    Home / Blog / Members / Groups / Businesses / Categories

… where “Members” and “Groups” represent the standard BP groups, and “Businesses” and “Categories” would be the second instance of the standard BP “Members” and “Groups” configuration. Is this possible? Would it take a code genius to implement? I’m wondering since BP is basically a collection of widgets plugged into some kind of framework, could we create a second set of widgets that perform this same function and have everything flow into the single installation?

    Thanks!

    Hi,

we are about to tackle the same problem:

    – Your solution of effectively duplicating groups and members as categories and businesses is one we are considering

    We are also considering:

    – Subcategories of members (one for individuals, one for businesses), and similarly subcategories of groups

    – Burt’s new plugin to tag groups, members, etc. is interesting. i.e. a member could be tagged as an individual or a businsess. A business could also add their category(accountant, etc.) as a tag, bypassing the need to use groups to do this

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

    Hi,

Trying to do the same thing. Not sure how to tackle it though. I’ll add my findings if I figure it out.

Search this site as folks have made modifications to BP contents plugin to allow this functionality. My understanding is many plugins may break with 1.2 (at least because of theme issues) so you might wait to see how BPContents looks at that point.
