Adding member avatars to blog post

I am using WPMU 2.9.2 and BP 1.2.3 and am looking for away to put a members avatar or mention with a link to their profile in a post when I mention them in a blog post, preferably with a plugin. I seems there are a few ways to do this through out buddy press but none I have seen work within the main blog itself.
Am I overlooking something?
