Adding tags to a user profile

I am setting up a BP site for a class reunion. I would like to dig into the PHP of BP but at the moment don’t have time to take on the learning curve(s).
My objective is to allow users to have a list of tags that they select or make up for themselves as part of their profile. The objective would be to allow users to easily look for other users with matching interests. Is there a way to do this or to accomplish this objective? If users can start their own groups that might help but would not be as flexible. Because of time constraints and my lack of PHP skills, I need something that is feature or an existing plug-in.
