Additional email field: notifications to go to both email addresses

The BP site I’m working on at the moment uses ldap integration for account creation/sign in. The plugin automatically grabs the student’s email address from their ldap details, which is exactly what we want it to do. However, it would be nice if there was an ability to add a 2nd email field to the profile (e.g. “personal email address”) which would allow the student to specify an additional email address (e.g. hotmail, yahoo, gmail, etc) for all of their email notifications to be cc’d to.
I’ve tried to hunt down plugins to this effect but I’ve not found anything so far. I was considering performing some core modifications to try to achieve this, but obviously that isn’t the optimal solution.
Does anyone have any pointers for a modification I could make or a plugin that I could easily adapt? I’m relatively decent with my php, though not amazingly experienced with buddypress
