An argument against unified search. (sort of)

  • From everything I’m reading it looks like unified search is coming soon. While I like the idea of a “search everything” option, I think it should be just that an option. I hope BP keeps the other dropdown search options (blogs, groups, etc.) so members can narrow their searches. Just make “unified search” another option in the select box.

for what it’s worth, I’m planning a single, unified search for the front page, with specific searches on specific pages: a member search on the members page, etc.

Right now, multiple search options is confusing for most users.

Does unified search cut down on confusion?

Lets face it BP is confusing as hell. It’s so powerful I believe it overwhelms most users. We get a thousand new members per month, but very few use any of the features. This is true with most community sites, but BP seems to be a little more so. All of us here are developers, but are users are not. The challenge is to create powerful simplicity. The basic BP interface is; here are a ton of cool features and you go figure the best way to use them. The intuitive nature of this CMS is not there yet……

…..s@#t I forgot my train of thought.

Oh yes, I believe search options will not only allow advanced searching it will better illustrate the “unified search” results by just showing the other search options available.

Actually, I’m a proponent of unified search. Is that a feature or BP 1.2.4 I hope?
