Auto refresh

Hey all, I’m on buddypress 1.6 and latest worpress 3.4.1. I am wondering how to have notifications auto refresh. Users do not want to have to refresh manually, and I want to be carefull of a full page refresh, in case they are trying to post something.
I hope that is clear.
