it stinks because now once this happens users don’t feel like going through the menus to change it to a picture they chose in the first place
Same problem here. Just reinstalled everything with the latest versions, because my previous attempt used subdomains instead of subdirectories.
The avatar doesn’t get uploaded/created. The full name also doesn’t get stored.
EDIT: It worked on the second attempt, after removing some avatar related code from bp-custom.php…

1.0 and prior to that RC2
8. Do you have any plugins other than BuddyPress installed and activated?
Bp-TOS (terms of service) which is the only possible interference
9. Are you using the standard BuddyPress themes or customized themes?

Buddypress 1.0.2 just installed and the same issue exists please any help would be appreciated
