Avatar transparency?

Hey,
Don’t know if it’s intended or not, but whenever I try to upload an avatar, for group or user, after the cropping, the image is saved as a jpg, which means the transparency of the original is lost.
Is it possible to work around this, by either saving as PNG or disabling cropping?
