Same problem here. you can visit ndcom.com basically I had a shared hosting plan and the bp/wpmu would be slow, I moved to dedicated server and “oh yeah” it’s fast, but now when new members come in they can’t upload photos.

Forgot to mention. GD2 image library is not installed on my site, but it was installed on my shared hosting. Is that needed? and the error message is “Missing a temporary folder.”

@Dace – I saw your comment in this related thread… but did you try the things that were suggested there: fixing permissions, checking for GD support, .htaccess issues, etc?

Avatars not uploading is a very common issue, so much that it has an an entry on the FAQs page:

Why will avatars not upload on my server? This could be a number of things, but make sure you have the GD image library installed. It might also be permissions, so make sure the web server has correct permissions.

Make sure to check these things (if you don’t know how to check for GD library support, ask your web host) and report any errors in your server logs.

Yes, it is required for uploading avatars and for uploading media to WordPress MU pages and posts.

    Hi lance,

Thanks for your answer. I try the.htaccess solution : I have comment the 2 lines but without success…. I have GD installed on my server

    … in my php.ini:

    GD Support enabled

    GD Version 2.0 or higher

    FreeType Support enabled

    FreeType Linkage with freetype

    FreeType Version 2.3.5

    T1Lib Support enabled

    GIF Read Support enabled

    GIF Create Support enabled

    JPG Support enabled

    PNG Support enabled

    WBMP Support enabled

For the last thing about permissions, i\’m not sure to understand.. It is not a chmod problem isn\’t it ?

    Edit : i try to chmod blogs.777 dir/1/files without sucess…

Ok, got GD2 library installed, got ImageMagick installed (as they both were installed on my shared hosting side); still getting same problems, “unable to upload photo, missing temp folder”

I also checked permissions – from what the various forum posts state, they are all correct. Also checked my php.ini file, seems correct as well.

What I’ll be doing is checking to see when I copied all the files from bp from my shared hosting to dedicated server, there might have been a hidden file or actual temp file that didn’t get copied over – Let me know if I’m on the right track…

    Thanks.

@Ninh – Sounds like you are on the right track. One word of caution, though: if you are manually copying files from one place to another it’s very easy to lose hidden files, like .htaccess files. These are very important and can cause problems with your install.

It’s highly recommend to start over with a new download or SVN checkout at the new server location so you are sure to get the correct setup.

@Dace – Same thing… if you upgraded and only copied certain files you can get into problems. If you are going to upgrade, it’s recommended that you replace the entire BuddyPress install (not just pieces).

Like I said before–and you can search the forums–this topic is very common and usually comes down to a few things: GD support, htaccess issues, or file permissions on the directory where the avatar images are uploaded to.

Yep, found the problem. It was my php.ini file. I went to my error log manager on the dedicated server and told me what was wrong. Oh, went I meant, copy-over, it was with the use of the “Migration Wizard” on my interface, but yes I did check for missing files and did a fresh install anyways to cover all my bases.

    Thanks all.

after some research…. the avatar’s upload is ok… i have in my blogs.dir the avatars uploaded… but only black image… i think this is a cropping issue as i see in another thread and ticket on the track…

    @edlass

I’m having a cropping issue. Also the images appear black. This is in both RC1 and 1.0 (skipped RC2).

Uploading and cropping work in every browser we’ve tried except for IE.

Dace, are you using IE by any chance?

Is IE support a known issue?
