bbpress and site evolution issue

This is probably an issue caused by my site originally having just bbpress and than adding Buddypress, with bbpress forums.
Issue is that it added Buddypress and allocated the corresponding forum to the Buddypress group. I still have a few orphaned forums without groups but that’s ok.
Problem is, when an original forum poster now goes to reply to that topic, they can’t and get a bland message that they can’t post. Because they haven’t joined the group assigned to the forum.
The error message needs to give more information and I’m wondering how to go about modifying the error to do just that. Such as a bit of logic to determine whether they are a member first and then display a different message.
Any clues and/or code snippet to solve this? Any help would be great.
