    @subster

    Hi there,

i’ve searched for hours and cant find a solution.

The avatarsthumb on many pics are just black.

I comment the lines in the .htacces out and hacked the bp-core-avatar.php as mentioned. The avatars i was trying it, are all over 150px. I tried it in diffrent browser.

I checked the file on the server, the thumb is really black. My GD-Version 2.0.34.

I have no Plugins installed and buddypress and wpmu are in the actual versions.

Please help me with that issue.

    Thanks

I comment the lines in the .htacces out and hacked the bp-core-avatar.php as mentioned.

I would restore these files back to their original coding before you continue looking into the cause of this particular issue. The advice from that particular member was from 5 months ago. Since then, many bug fixes and improvements have been made in BP.

When it comes to the BuddyPress core files, it is never a good idea to hack them. Do not touch to core files. We will not be able to help you if you are not using the same core files everyone else is using.

Once you have done that, answer these questions:

    1. You’re positive that the permissions on blogs.dir and the existing subfolders are set to 777?
    2. Are you uploading a gif or png image?
    3. Are there ANY errors in your log file? If so, what are they?
    4. You mentioned that this issue occurs no matter what browser you try. Which versions of Firefox and Internet Explorer are you using?

I have the same problem, when I try to change the avatar it either keeps the original avatar and can never change to a new one or it goes black for some people.

I am using IE 8 or FF 3.0.10.

All folder in blogs.dir and subfolders are set to 777.

The avatar for mine it stays the same avatar no matter what I upload. It comes from Gravatar.

Some are black. It seems that if you choose a avatar on sign up you get to pick and it works but if you just chose a default one then you can never change it. Any ideas?

    A few questions:

    1. Do you have any non-BuddyPress plugins installed?
    2. Do you have ANY errors in your server’s log files?
    3. Which version of the GD library are you using?
    4. Which version of PHP?

The avatar for mine it stays the same avatar no matter what I upload. It comes from Gravatar.

What do you have set in WPMU’s backend under “Settings > Discussion > Avatars >Default Avatar”?

Since you are using Gravatars, the avatar should change when you upload an new image to your gravatar.com account.

I have the Welcome Package plugin installed. I tried removing all plugins and that didn’t work though.

I don’t want to use Gravatar, that’s just the properties of the thumbnails, no matter what I upload it defaults to a gravatar image. I want the users to be able to upload directly in BuddyPress.

There is one error: (I think I am looking in the right spot for errors. (analysis and log files, Errors):

[Wed May 27 11:52:40 2009] [error] [client 66.249.71.151] File does not exist: /home/thehsm/public_html/wp-content/plugins/membership-site-memberwing/function.require-once

Admin Settings: Show Avatars and set to Mystery Man.

    PHP 5.2.5

    GD Version bundled (2.0.34 compatible)

    FreeType Version 2.2.1

    A couple of thoughts:

    1. You’ve mentioned that you set the permissions on blogs.dir to 777. Check to make sure that the user & the group for that directory is not root:root
    2. Try disabling the Welcome Package plugin, although this should not be related to your issue in any way. Also, contact DJPaul and let him know about this error.

Hey, I don’t want bugs :( give them to Burt!

Welcome Pack doesn’t touch anything to do with avatars.

    Lol!

Yes, I know that. I thought, though, that you would like a nice bug!

So as per the bit of error msg you posted (possibly unrelated to the blank avatar icon I think but anyway):

[Wed May 27 11:52:40 2009] [error] [client 66.249.71.151] File does not exist: /home/thehsm/public_html/wp-content/plugins/membership-site-memberwing/function.require-once

That is a) a garbled filename/file path and b) not part of BuddyPress. I suggest talking to the author of that plugin to try to find out what’s going on. There appears to be some specific instructions in that plugin’s readme.txt about where to locate the memberwing.php file.

Ok, The user and group is me, and I tried deleting the Welcome plugin but still doesn’t work.

Any ideas? I guess I can have the users try gravatar but most don’t know anything about it.

    Thx,
