BP for an Alumni site

Would appreciate thoughts on my idea to develop a site for my Alumni (West Point – none really exists for us). I already run several WP based sites so BP was a logical choice but I did look into Elgg and Drupal as well as joomla. I’d love to stick with BP (I have it installed as of last night. All good. Here are my criteria: I don’t want to create a platform for everyone to build their own blogs (unless you can tell me what I’m missing) Everyone that talked to me about this idea really wanted the following: engagement in the form of posting, comments, discussions, community & membership and maybe the ability to find and connect to others via class and other criteria. Perhaps the ability to thrown in photos, video, polls and other social media stuff would be great. My only (very small) annoyance (for em) is that I can’t do LastName & FirstName for registration, but I can live with that. SO am I on the right platform?

  • Not allowing blogs is as simple as turning that off in Site Admin > Options and then not installing the bp-blogs component. That will remove the blogs directory and all blog items from the navigation.

aside from that, this use case seems appropriate?

Yeah, BuddyPress is definitely seems appropriate for this project. Most everything you mentioned is already in BP or in the works. Even if it’s not, WPMU is easy enough to build on that you could add any remaining features easily.

Thanks Guys. I’ll throw this out there: If anyone on the BP project or elsewhere wants to give me an assist to quickly configure it and set it up to meet this usage – I will gladly let you show it off as a shining example, etc. Would love to call someone and ask a few questions so I build it properly
