    I get the feeling this may be a touchy subject…

    Buddypress privacy seems to be abandonware from what I read. My site is rather predicated on it, and its starting to be fragile in recent bp releases.

    Is anyone taking it on? Is the bp team not keen (it looks like at one time it was aiming for core)? Does anyone want to revive it?

    Personally I think the functionality it provides is immensely good!

    BuddyPress would need some core changes to make privacy work on things like individual activity items. You can get some type of privacy by blocking pages. BuddySuite has a few options for users to block certain profile pages to friends only.
