buddybar on buddypress.org- how can I reproduce on my site?

I very much like the buddybar on this site (buddypress.org), the way that it has the notifications on the right, followed my the user’s profile name, avatar, then a dropdown with a bunch of incredibly handy links to buddypress components. My buddybar does not have these features (the notification looks plain, is positioned over to the left, and I don’t have the user info/links.)
If these are custom modifications, any suggestions on where to look, or how to go about repeating them?

Take a look at http://themeloom.com/2012/02/how-to-make-buddypress-use-the-new-wp-admin-bar/

It’ll become the default in our next major BuddyPress release, but you can switch to it right now.

Is there a way to remove the “edit my profile” link that is next to the avatar in this new buddybar/adminbar merge?
