I agree. I’ve seen this locally and also on this very website.
I’ve posted this last night.

rc2 has so many bugs that disable basic features. Bug fix should be released asap.
Since other users are facing this, I’ve made this ticket as critical.

Andy’s got a few bug fixes he’s working on at the moment. Keep reporting them as you come across them but also know that he’s on top of them. BP.org was actually down completely yesterday for about 20 minutes, so we’re lucky he brought it back up in its current form.
I wish I could contribute, but I got no skills to code.
btw, I don’t see active forum users reporting problems/bugs on the trac. Perhaps they don’t know they can simply do it with the same account.
Trac is intimidating to most people, including me somedays. I don’t think it’s not knowing they have the ability, I think it’s just not knowing how to use the trac system.
I’m not sure if I’m using it correctly or not. But type the problem, attach file if any, and submit. right?
I always like to verify it’s an issue 1st in the forums, then report it to the trac myself.
agree with @belogical. Sometimes it’s user error or there’s an easy fix.
Before you report bugs, always check to see if it broken using the default themes. Most of the time you’ll find those bugs are because you haven’t updated your old theme properly.
I’ve just checked and replying to messages works fine on the default themes. I’ll take a look what the problem is on buddypress.org – but it’s most likely because I forgot to mention something that needs to be upgraded.
my default themes are the ones with rc2, but can’t reply. I’m certain because I had hard time fixing my css as I mistakenly deleted everything when I updated to rc2 official release.
messages seem to be working again from me on buddpress.org
