I’d like to make it so that when a user clicks on their avatar on their profile page, a modal window appears in which they have the option to change their profile picture. In other words, I’d like to transclude the content of /profile/change-avatar/ into a modal window that appears when a user clicks their avatar on their profile page.

Is there a shortcode for the change avatar functionality? If so, I can potentially put it into a modal box that pops up upon clicking the avatar. If there is no such shortcode, how can I get it there myself?

I can probably help you there, BP Profile Shortcodes Extra has a [bpps_profile_link] shrtcode, you can use this point to any bp profile page for the viewing user. You can use the profile_page="/profile/avatar" setting the achieve your need.
