    Hey everyone,

I’ve been working on a new BuddyPress theme and was wondering if you guys could provide some feedback.
    Check it out at: http://www.daftcrew.net

I know there are still some bugs present and I’m working these out. Im mainly looking for feature requests and overall ideas 😉

    Thanks in advance!
    Cheers,
    Aron

There is no point in creating a BuddyPress theme any more since 1.7 see:

    Theme Compatibility & Template Files

any theme that has standard WordPress template structure is compatible so basically all you have to do is create a standard WordPress theme.
    Cheers!

    Hey @bphelp,

Thanks for your reply. Im completely aware of this, and even though ANY theme is now compatible with BuddyPress it would look like the basic BP theme that ships with the plugin. For full specific theme integration we’d still have to adjust that to match the theme right?

Looking forward to your feedback! Thanks again 🙂

The bp-default theme that ships with BP is being retired so in the future there will not be a theme that ships with BP in favor of theme compatibility. If I was in your position I would just focus on making a really good WordPress theme with standard template structures and it should work with BuddyPress. The bonus is if the theme is good and works with just WP then you’ve not pigeon holed your profit to just BP users.

But this has nothing to do with the bp-default theme? This is a theme that is based on twitter bootstrap customized to match with a buddypress site. It also works with WordPress that has no BP enabled…

I feel that there are just a few really good themes for BuddyPress out there like BuddyBoss and recently InspireBook by rtCamp. Im looking to contribute to that list 😉

    Hi @aronprins

I like the idea of the left-hand side navigation (viewing on desktop). It seems to allow everything else to have more space on the screen. The colour scheme is good too, very easy on the eye.

Maybe add a little left and right padding for when people are viewing from their mobiles or tablets. To do that, you could probably make use of Bootstrap’s media queries to target the various device sizes.

    Nice.

There is definitely a need for BP Themes aka Template Packages.

When the upper right mobile-mode nav is clicked, the layout is rather awkward.

Please keep these forums informed of your progress.
This will be a premium theme?
There are some good testers here that might be willing to take a look: hnla, mercime

contrary to some of the other commenters, I think there is space for a theme to focus on some of the buddypress shortcomings – even those that work with WP / BP – there are often issues that are not well handled with a BP enabled site, and many theme authors are reluctant to adress the usability issues that occur when using as the base for a buddypress site.

Suffusion for example is a good WP theme, with some enhancements for buddypress at one point.. but the next page navigation is too small, and not easy to adjust. There are also majoy issues with the tabbed sub menus like in user profiles (site/member/profile then activyty, media – etc) – and no easy fix for that.

As far as your theme being based on bootstrap, I suggest you scrap that and switch to foundation of something. I love bootstrap myself, however wp themes that are based on bootstrap all fail to work well with bp-media in my recent experience.

So the choice pretty much comes to using a buddypress with a good theme and no bp-media plugin, or use a buddypress site with bp-media and a theme that is not based on bootstrap. Which really limits things quite a bit in my humble opinion.

    Hey @djsteveb,

Thanks for your comment. Really appreciate the feedback, and couldnt agree more!
First of all, im more then willing to make current themes BuddyPress compatible.

Although they already are, the default style shipped with BP might not suit the users theme as much as they wanted. (Unfortunatly cause Theme Compatibility really rocks!)

Regarding the user menu’s: with my latest theme(http://buddyflare.themebp.com) im considering building in a function that allows a user to disable the default menu and use the black sidebar menu instead with the new BuddyPress menu features. This should solve the menu problem you are talking about 😉

BP-Media is a complete other story, but: Fixed it.
After reading your comment I’ve decided to integrate special templates to match my theme so BP-Media is fully compatible with BuddyFlare!

Hope this will help you in the future, and feel free to contact me via http://themebp.com if you need my help or want to discuss future themes!

    Cheers,
    Aron
