Calling bp_core_get_userid from a HP widget

Hi,
I’m using a pretty straight forward bit of code to output the user avatar and link by ID. The code works fine on BP pages within a user profile but as soon as I place it within a custom widget on the homepage it seems it can no longer reference the calls being made and displays nothing. It’s obvious i’m not referencing something global in the code, does anyone know off hand what it might be or what I’m missing?
