Can’t work out how to change default messages

I’ve followed these instructions verbatim a number of times: http://codex.buddypress.org/extending-buddypress/customizing-labels-messages-and-urls/

I can’t for the life of me get any message changes to appear on the site. Can anyone help? I’m happy to pay for someone to do this, and let me know what files I need to edit that have been created that will change BP messages.
