Categorise groups by city?

I would like to categorise my groups by city. I tried BP Groups Heirarchy plugin to create a parent group for the cities. This is great but clicking on a parent group link takes me to that group (which will always be empty) – i want it to link to a page of all the child groups.
Is there another way to do this, maybe using custom fields?
