Change Avatar Upload Folder

In an effort to migrate a bunch of avatars into BuddyPress I need to change:
/wp-content/uploads/avatars/$user-id
to
/wp-content/uploads/avatars/$user-name
That is… currently the folder names are taken from the user’s id. I would like the folder’s name to be taken from the user’s name.
Does anyone have any direction to give on this?
