Change avatar via code

Hi, does anyone know of a way to change a user’s avatar via code, rather than going through the upload process?
I’m looking to create a selection of avatars that users can choose from (rather than uploading their own)
I am aware there is this plugin https://github.com/imath/bp-avatar-suggestions and although it’s very good I don’t really like the way it works.
I wouldn’t need any way of managing the avatars from wordpress admin, just want to be able to pass a file location to be set as an avatar.
