Change where the profile menu is shown

I’d like to move the activity, profile, messages, etc.. links to the left side of my page, a la Facebook, but I’m not sure how.

First up what theme are you using? Are you using the default BuddyPress theme?

Depending on the answer to above if it was the default you’d be looking to move:
