Child theme not working

I’m unsure if this is a BuddyPress issue or a WordPress issue, but I’ve having a problem creating my first child theme.
I am using bp-default, and creating the most basic of child themes with only a style.css to change just a couple of colors, but it’s not working.
The theme shows up correctly on the Themes admin page, with the correct paths to things… when I preview it, the site looks like it inherited the parent stuff as expected, but not my changes.
It gets even worse if I activate the child theme, then the entire site reverts to the default bp-default theme with not only styles missing, but also widget settings, etc.
Any clue as to what might be happening here?
