Controlling email notifications

Is there a way to allow users to control the notifications they get in email. For example, if they would like to turn off the notifications that get sent when someone sends them a new private message.

I don’t see any mention of this in the forum or in Andy’s roadmap, but it seems like a feature that would be quite popular.

And is there a way for the BP Administrator to disable some e-mail notification by default for all the users? (i.e. new post wire e-mail notification Yes to No by default for everybody, for example)

    Thanks!

Any updates on this? My server is always being flagged for the excessive amount of mail my site is sending out because of notifications.

Is there a way to turn email notifications off for everyone?

@alexmaximo How many members? My site is pretty active and we built the forum notification plugin (which was trumped by Boone’s much better version!) which sends out emails on every single forum post and reply and we aren’t stressing any servers.

@mike: Even with just a small site. I was running it on first with a VPS hosted site and it got shut down by the provider. They say that the “huge” amount of mail coming from BP notifications are “spam” and a violation of their TOS since, they say, it got the IP blacklisted.

I moved it to a dedicated server but I’m concerned that the IP address will be blacklisted if the system sends out hundreds of mail notifications in an hour. Problem is, I don’t know how much mail is too much. And if that should qualify as spamming. :) Should this be a concern?

Was just wondering if there’s a way for the admin to set email notifications off by default. Or if not, if there’s a code we can edit to do that. :) Feedback would be great.

Sounds like you need a better host.

@Andy. I’m running it on a dedicated server right now. Just a bit paranoid from what I experienced from my old host. Should I be worried about being blacklisted just because of notifications? Seems like you guys aren’t having that problem and I’m sure your traffic’s a billion times more than my site. :)

@alex Andy’s right, but 1st I’d ask….Are hundreds of emails an hour what you expect to be sending out? ie you have hundreds of friend requests, updates, blog posts, etc all being done each hour? If so, 1. God Bless you success If not, then you have a different problem.

@alexmaxim unless they completely missed your question, I guess the answer is no.

I’d also like to know if it’s possible to customize the default settings for e-mail notifications. Not because of server issues, I just don’t want to spam my users by default. (using 1.2 beta)
