Counting #hashtags in the Activity Stream

Is there a way to keep track of / or count hashtags included in activity updates? I’m trying to come up with a way off keeping weekly/monthly stats of hashtags.
Here is the plugin I’m using (works great btw!)

You would have to write a function that loops through all activity finds the string #whatever and then returns a count. Not difficult at all if you know php.
