Were did you place your custom 404.php file?
Both the bphome and bpmember themes have their own 404.php file. Depending on where you are when you try entering a non-existent url, either the home or member 404.php file will fire–if it exists.
i am using a different theme for the main theme. my 404 page is in that theme. It worked fine before upgrading to the latest versions of MU and BP. Were there some changes that may be causing the issue?
Try switching back to the default BP home theme and see if that theme’s 404 page works. If it does, then that means the theme you are using is not up to date with the BP theme file changes.
If that is the case, you can do two things:
1. Try copying over the functions.php file from the bphome file into your custom theme and see if that solve the issue.
2. Contact the theme designer and ask when they plan to update their theme to be WPMU 2.8.1 compatible–I assume you are talking just about the home theme and not the member theme.
yes, just the home theme is affected to my knowledge. I got the 404 to work when clicking a hard link inthe site that was not real, but if I type in an arbitrary page that was never created then I get the search page. I am using the default theme from the last version of WPMU, but slightly modified. I guess I will copy those functions and see what happens. thanks.
copying the functions worked. thanks!
