Date format on posts

Is there a way to change the current way Buddypress handles dates?
The systems has been setup to mark posts by how long ago – 4 minutes – 3 days etc.
I know this is an attempt to be informal etc. but it would be nice if some kind of real dates could also be used, so it can be referenced as “I posted it on May 15th”.
I looked but didn’t see any options to deal with this or add-ons.
