Does it make sense to have BBpress AND BuddyPress?

I run this website (Cureuphoria, about The Cure), for which I am implementing a BP section (called CureMates).
I already had a BBpress installation, with a forum. Now that BP is joining in, does it make sense to keep both?
What’s the difference between BP forums and a regular BBpress forum?
Also, at some point while configuring BP I was asked to use or not an existing BPpress installation and I did so.
Is BPpress necessary to run forums in BP?

Yes, bbPress is necessary if you want group forums.
