Editing BP PHP Files in Starkers

I’m running WP 3.8 and BP 1.9.1. I am developing a site from the ground up using the Starkers HTML5 theme skeleton. This community section is the last component of my site, and though BP is working with my existing design, I want to juggle where some of the components are being called for on screen.
For example, I’d like to move the individual group description from the main content area to the sidebar. I am also looking to develop custom sidebars for each page of the community, not just each component.
I have created a buddypress folder in my Starkers theme directory, and copied the buddypress files/folders from the Plugin Directory (leaving originals intact). Now, if I make changes to the files in the Starkers buddypress folder, those changes do not reflect on the site. As a test, I also made changes to one of the php files in the Plugins folder, and those changes were also not reflected on the site.
I have to be doing something wrong. Can you please help?
