Email Notifications on Group Activity

Is there currently any way to set up email notifications (on an opt-out basis) for group activity A-la Facebook Groups? I know this feature sortof exists in bbPress, but is there any way to this outside of that plugin? Thanks in advance.

Thanks, Paul. Is there a formal process for requesting this feature? To me, this is an important feature for those of us trying to build fledgling community sites, since users are not likely to manually sign on to check their notifications. Thanks in advance, Nathan
