Every menu link, including settings, goes to a 404 error page?

I just installed buddypress on a clean,fresh wordpress install and selected the default theme.
the home url is like this: http://www.mysite.com/buddypress
when i try to use buddypress, if i choose any menu link on the main page or in the top menu in the admin panel, it all takes me to a 404 error page on the main site. help.

Go to “Settings” > “Permalinks” and set them to anything but “Default”.

If your .htaccess file were writable , we could do this automatically, but it isn’t so these are the mod_rewrite rules you should have in your .htaccess file.

as I do if I have the file. htaccess, what should I BUILD
