Hello! Total newb here.

I’m trying to extend groups to include custom fields that are searchable. While I’ve seen some very interesting work being done to add custom taxonomies to BuddyPress groups, tagging isn’t quite what I need.

I would like to define additional metadata about a group, like its physical location, date it started, etc., and then be able to also find groups with matching data using a search tool.

The most important specific use case I need to accomplish is being able to find a group by zip code/geolocation. I’m not looking for help on that aspect just yet, simply how on earth I add searchable custom fields to BuddyPress groups beyond ‘name’ and ‘description’.
