(1) I need to have rich user profiles, which include basic html formatting, as well as member portfolios.

Here’s an example of the type of page I want to create:

I need this for several sites.

(2) I also need to be able to control access to “member only” content on the website, so that members need to log in to access certain pages.

(3) I need to support several classes of membership, and allow users to pay membership fees through a payment gateway such as PayPal.

Can all of these things be done with BuddyPress?

yes, you can user a few plugins.

1. the textarea profile field has a wysiwyg text editor
2 and 3. you can use membership 2 plugin

Can you name a plugin that allows members to create photo portfolios on their profiles, as shown in my example? I have not been able to find one.
