Featured Groups idea

What do you think is the best approach to make a “Featured Groups” widget? Purpose: to highlight groups I’d like new members to check out. We’re talking 3 or 4 here, in a permanent spot.

Write a new widget? Mod an existing one? Drop in some code into a Text widget?

I’d make a widget, an provide some settings to either enter the slug of each group to feature, or the group ID.

Gotcha. Will keep you all posted. (you should be a developer or something, you keep coming up with great solutions ;-)

I would find a way to perhaps make this automated as well, or provide the option. I know some clients and people that will set this and forget about it. What would be REALLY cool (and won’t happen for months, but that’s ok) is that people can recommend groups (with a simple “thumbs up”) and recent high recommended groups can be it’s own widget. Oh, i’ll have to write that down on my to-do list.

That would be cool. Happy New Year btw and I’ll leave it off my list since it’s on yours ;-)

Ha, well mine is a “wish” list. There’s also a new car and new computer workstation on that too, just to put things into perspective.

It’s honestly difficult for me to write group plugins right now because i have no site to test them on. And I don’t feel like creating 20-30 groups with REAL content just for testing at the moment. That DOES sound lazy though.

OK. Here’s the code for the Featured Groups widget. It’s the first widget I have ever written so if you find a bug or some horribly inefficient code, speak up! That said, it works great and has 2 parameters

    1. Title

    2. Group ID’s to feature

    Code: http://pastey.net/105394

Install: just copy the code into a file ex. mywidgets.php and put the file in your mu-plugins folder. Tweak as nec, rinse, repeat. Enjoy.

Having problems with the featured groups widget ever since I upgraded from RC-1 to BP 1.0, when I click on a featured group it takes me to the list of groups ([my-domain]/wordpress-mu/groups) rather than to the group itself, any idea what could be causing this to happen? Cheers

I’m closing this thread. A solution to Skollie’s issue is provided in this thread.
