Field size textarea registration page

I would like to change the size (cols=”50″) of the textarea on the BP (1.8.1) registration page and found next code:
<textarea id=”field_622″ name=”field_622″ cols=”40″ rows=”5″></textarea>
After editing this line of code in register.php nothing seems to change, not even after clearing my cache. Can anyone tell me how to solve this?
