Final resolution for Autosuggest for Display Names?

    Hey All,

I am looking for a way to make the autosuggest feature of bp-labs 1.3 work using display names. So that if I want to @mention John Smith (jsmith) I could type in either the string @joh or @jsmi, and it would present me with a list of Display Names that apply to both to choose from.

There are three threads I found that present strategies, but none of them are working.

    This one by @mwbarker:
    http://buddypress.org/support/topic/mention-autosuggest-for-display-names-mod/
    (Results in an error)

    This one by @itchesavvy: http://buddypress.org/support/topic/display-name-autosuggest/
(The string ends before it is made clear what the final edited …autosuggest.php file should look like. I gave this a shot for an hour, but was getting the same error as with the other option:

Warning: preg_replace() [function.preg-replace]: Compilation failed: nothing to repeat at offset 0 in /directory-to-plugin/class-bplabs-autosuggest.php on line 83

There is also workaround posted here: http://customwebdesignseo.com/fixing-bp-mentions-display-names-conflict/ by @umagokhale, which advocates changing the display names to the usernames across the site, but in my case that isn’t an option.

In any case, the bp-labs group that @matt started is closed now, so I was hoping that someone had some insight into how this could be addressed. I’m running WP3.5.1 Multisite and Bpress 1.7.2 if that matters.

    Many thanks!

Hi, I would like to see this as a feature. Is this something that could be easily resolved if someone were paid to do it?
