Forum Crashes with nearly all plug ins.

I’m running WordPress 2.9.2 and the latest buddypress and I have the same recurring theme. When I install plugins ~90% of the time they appear to be working but in fact have crashed my forum, sometimes I can still access the forum but not the topics, sometimes I just get a blank page. My site is http://www.science2point0.com and my current plugin success rate means that I have 5 plugins active and 25 inactive as they crash the forums. Has anyone else got this problem? Is there a fix? I’m hoping 3.0 may be the answer but I’m starting to get the impression it may just make things worse.
Any suggestions welcome?
