Fresh install on top of WP multi-site, avatars not working

I’ve got a fresh install of BP on top of a virgin WP 3.3.1 install configured as multi-site. The only problem I’ve ran into (so far) is that avatars don’t work. One can go through the upload process, crop the image, and even get a message saying that it has succeeded, but the image displayed remains the white-on-grey silouette.
Maybe a multi-site BP installation just doesn’t make much sense so this problem is rarely encountered. No?
