Do you have it ON from the configuration?
this has also happened for me, and i did have it turned on. disabling and re-enabling it did the trick.
Maybe I my brain is a bit mushy but I don’t see where to enable or disable it? I can give someone access to the site if necessary – this is driving me NUTS!!

Login to the WPMU admin area, navigate to BuddyPress > Component Setup.
Start enabling/disabling and see what happens.
Thanks r-a-y, I did look into that – I have everything enabled except Blog Tracking and bbPress Forums. My only other options (all of which are enabled) are as follows:
Activity Streams
Groups
Private Messaging
Comment Wire
Extended Profiles
Status Updates
…..
Did you disable it, click OK, enable it, click OK? This is what fixed it for me.
I am not sure what to disable is the problem – I don’t see any friend component even listed! Any ideas?
If under “BuddyPress > Component Setup” you do not see a “Friends” section, then you must have an incomplete BuddyPress install. Would you please go to your site and verify that you have bp-friends.php and a directory (folder) called bp-friends installed under /buddypress/.
Jeff,
I have a bp-friends folder but I don’t see any bp-friends.php anywhere. I will try re-uploading just that file and see what happens…
Thank you.
That did it! Thank you Jeff. Not sure how that file wasn’t uploaded but it’s working like a champ now (minus some necessary CSS fixes).
Cheers!

Cool! I’m glad that was an easy fix and that you’re back up and running.
