Give only certain users BuddyPress access

    If I install BuddyPress is it possible to only assign buddypress profiles to certain users?

    To be more specific…we want to set up a site where users pay a subscription to create a BuddyPress profile and be listed as a member.

    But we also have a system where users can pay to post events to a directory (and edit them) without paying for a profile.

    The people who pay to post events will need to have a user account so they can login and edit their posts…but we don’t want to include them as part of our BuddyPress network unless they purchase a profile subscription.

    Would this be possible, or when you use BuddyPress do all users accounts automatically become BuddyPress users?

    Yes, but you can filter them out based on things like membership level.
    It requires custom code that is specific to your install.

    Oh, well that would work fine. I can easily specify the user role when people are registered, and only assign the BuddyPress designated role to those who pay the appropriate subscription…how complex is it to configure BuddyPress to only enroll specific user roles?

    You’ll probably find it easiest to use something like S2 Member to provide user access roles, but you’ll still need a few functions that run args to filter out s2_member_level0 ids from the BP members & activity loops and something to prevent access to user account screens.

    Great, very helpful thanks.

    Do you think it’d be possible to just use a user-role plugin and revoke BuddyPress permissions to all except paid members? Or does BuddyPress not have such permissions available?

    Any examples of the kind of functions you mentioned that I could reference? Not meaning to get too greedy though…
