Group forums not working (again)

I am using BuddyPress 1.0.2 on WPMU 2.7.1 with bbPress 1.0.

After some initial troubles (see http://buddypress.org/forums/topic/group-forums-not-working ) I had been able to use group forums. I didn’t came around to actually using them until now… and now they are broke again. :) When I activate a group forum, no corresponding forum is created. When I try to post something, I get a non-helpful message telling me that there was a problem and not telling what the problem was.

oci-bp-sayhello.php replies with a convenient “Hello from bbPress!” so I guess XMLRPC communication is working.

Since I had been focusing on other parts of the site for a few weeks I do not know when exactly the group forums broke. It is probably noteworthy that I updated to bbPress 1.0 final and buddypress 1.0.2 just yesterday.

I already tried turning off every plugin except the buddypress helper in bbpress. With no effect.

I also use bpGroups, but the problem exists with or without bpGroups activated.

I did not change the password of the admin user that is used for the forum integration since it last worked. Just to be sure I set a new password and updated it in buddypress and bpGroupd – without effect.

Any suggestions what to check next?

By the way, I think it would be really helpful to extend the error message with a a little more information. :)

When you upgraded bbpress, did you remember to put all of your extra codes back into bb-config? And again, for bbpress, when you upgraded did you overwrite the files or did you remove them all and then upload the new ones? Did you go back into bbpress admin & make sure xml was still enabled? Did you check buddypress forums setup to make sure the info was still there? If you try to create a new group, are discussions enabled?

bb-config was untouched by the update. I deleted the old bbpress and then uploaded the new one. xmprpc is still enabled in bbpress admin. Everything looks normal in buddypress forums setup. When I create a new group, both wire and forum are activated by default.

BUT: When I create a new group, everything works smoothly. A new forum is created and I can post topics.

I also just managed to sucessfully create a group forum for an old group. It seems that just the one group that I originally used for testing did not work and still does not.

For me that makes things “good enough”, because I can just delete this one old group. It was a test group anyway. I’m just wondering whether I should mark this thread as resolved, although the original problem is not resolved, just less troublesome. :)

See if you can disable discussions on the old group & re-enable them. Hopefully that’ll do the trick.

Nope, still nothing. Maybe a group forum just can’t be called “Test” for some reason? :)

Update to bbPress 1.0.1 didn’t help either, by the way…

Did you follow TheEasyButton’s instructions of disabling and re-enabling Discussion Forum in the “Test” group?

    ht*p://example.com/groups/YOURGROUP/YOURUSERNAME/group-settings

Uncheck “Enable discussion forum” and “Save Changes”.

Then re-check “Enable discussion forum” and “Save Changes” again.

    Also remove the oci-bp-sayhello.php file.

This might sound silly but, here’s what I would do (after backing everything up). Leave your bb-config file. Delete everything else in the forums directory. Upload alpha 6. Then, upload bbPress 1. Don’t DELETE alpha 6. Just overwrite it. I’ve been messing with this upgrade for a couple of days now and if I delete/replace, the update doesn’t work. If I overwrite, it does work. Seems as though there’s a file that’s been removed from the new version that buddypress looks for.

    If that doesn’t work…..

I’m wondering if your upgrade actually upgraded. The way I do the update is, I rename bb-config to something like bb-config2. Then I replace the files in the forums directory & navigate to /forums. It asks for your database info & then says “oh. There’s already a database. Maybe you want to use the upgrade script” You click the upgrade link and it does a couple changes and says it’s done. Then, I open up the newly created bb-config & (using the OLD bb-config) I put back any of the custom codes that I need such as the cookies & defines.

I hope something in there helps. =D

    @r-a-y: Yes, I did.

@TheEasyButton: That’s a bit too complicated. :) I could just remove the buggy group and I think that would solve the problem. I’m merely leaving it out of curiosity to see if there is a real fixable bug behind it. Down-/Upgrading to alpha 6 would also just be a workaround and I think the group-deleting would be the easier workaround in this case. :)

I also did not have any trouble with the update otherwise. Everything (except this one group) works smoothly and bbPress does not complain about anything. So I guess the update worked.

    But thanks for the input.
