Grouping notifications by sender?

Is it possible to group notifications by sender? For example with the message notifications, Member A can send a message to you and you get a notification, and then Member B sends you a message and the notification becomes “You have 2 new messages”. Is it possible to leave them as separate notifications but grouped by sender, and then perhaps group them additionally by quantity such “Member A has sent you 3 new messages” and “Member B has sent you 5 new messages”?
Is this acheivable with the bp_notifications_add_notification function?
If possible, would someone mind pointing me in the right direction?
