Groups and forum for groups

Hi guys,
This is a really silly question, but hopefully I will be able to get my head around it.
When playing around with a BuddyPress install I noticed I can add a forum to the group.
What is the purpose of adding a forum to a group. The reason I ask is I thought they are both stand alone items, as I can add replies to a group right?
Any advice helpful…
