Here’s The Group Problem – Help Pls!

I’ve got a brand new clean install (BW Version 1.2.3 & WPMU 2.9.2). My site is on the subdomain: http://community.inherited-values.com/

I was going along swimmingly, when I noticed that the WP blog on the main url http://inherited-values.com/ had errors. The main page looked fine, but whenever you clicked a link to an individual post you got 404s.

Investigation shows that “something” deleted the part of the .htaccess file (which lets you have “pretty” urls rather than “index.php?date=” urls) at the main domain.

As this happened at the time that I was plunking along in MU/BP — and having corrected that error for the main domain blog now seems to make my groups invisible (they show up in the group counts but are not visible/accessible) — I’m pretty sure therein lies the culprit.

Any ideas on how to protect the .htaccess file for the main domain and still get BP groups and forum to work?

And please, speak to me like a child as I am quite the newbie. :)

Oh, and before you all ask:

    BuddyPress Album+
    BuddyPress Like
    Custom Profile Filters for BuddyPress

Yes, everything was working fine with the template & with the plugins when I left. The only change known is the disrupted access file.

Changing back to the default BP theme seems to have restored the groups – which leaves me wondering if there’s possibly some sort of time problem with the theme I was using…? Again, nothing else changed or was installed, but after a few hours, groups are not accessible. I’ve tried to contact the theme developer, three different ways, but no reply in 5 days. So we’ll see what the default does.

The theme designer says, “Any theme including my BuddyPress theme cannot block or prevent access to pages/posts or group sites.” Is this true? If so, why is one of the first trouble-shooting steps to return to default BP theme? Why do BP and the plugins work with the default, but not the other theme?
