Hosting PDF’s on my BP site

Sorry for such a noobish question but I want to host a few PDF’s on my site.
When I’m uploading them to my server, wheich directory do they go in?
I’m getting them on the server but when I try to link to them I’m getting 404 errors so they musn’t be in the right place.
Any ideas or is there a decent pdf plugin for wordpress/ buddypress?
